HMB Endeavour Circumnavigation of Australia 2011-2012
The Australian National Maritime Museum’s magnificent replica of Captain Cook’s ship HM Bark Endeavour will make an historic circumnavigation of Australia in 2011–12.
The finely crafted wooden vessel will visit 18 ports on the 13-month voyage.
In 15 of the ports it will open for public inspection as a floating museum, displaying the living and working conditions on one of history’s great voyages of discovery – Cook’s circumnavigation of the globe in 1768-71.
Between ports Endeavour will be sailed by a core professional crew and 40 adventurous voyage crew who pay for their places on board and ‘learn the ropes’ – that is, learn first-hand how seafarers sailed and navigated tall ships in the 18th century.
Anyone wishing to join the ship, for what has been described as the sailing experience of a lifetime, can apply online now for a berth.
Mary-Louise Williams, director of the Australian National Maritime Museum, said today the circumnavigation is a major initiative in the museum’s outreach program. The museum, she said, is constantly striving to take its facilities, its services and its ideals out across the country to share with all Australians.
“We’re very excited at the prospect of Endeavour making its first voyage right around Australia and calling at so many cities and towns along the way,” she added.
The ship will depart Sydney on Friday 15th April 2011 and it’s expected back at its home berth at the National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour, on Monday 21st May 2012.
The ports where it will open for inspection are: Brisbane (28 April – 8 May 2011), Gladstone (21 – 26 May), Townsville (10 – 14 June), Cairns (24 June – 5 July), Darwin (3 – 14 August), Geraldton (30 September – 4 October), Fremantle (14 October – 1 November), Bunbury (9 – 13 November), Fremantle (20 November – 30 December), Albany (14 – 18 January 2012), Port Lincoln (4 – 8 February), Adelaide (16 – 23 February), Portland (7 – 11 March), Hobart (24 March – 3 April), Melbourne (18 – 29 April), Eden (9 – 13 May).
Volunteering is a fulfilling way to get involved in some way with the HMB Endeavour circumnavigation of Australia.
We're looking for enthusiastic people to act as tour guide ambassadors, showing visitors through the replica vessel at each visiting port.
The magnificent HMB Endeavour is a sea-going vessel, but in port transforms into a 'floating museum', accurately representing what a sailor's life was really like - presented as if James Cook and his crew just disembarked during their epic 1768 - 71 world voyage when they crossed the Pacific, circumnavigated New Zealand and explored the east coast of Australia.
Show our visitors the Mess Deck set for a meal, Joseph Banks' botanical specimens in the Great Cabin and Cook's private cabin just as it would have appeared all those years ago.
