Established in 1960, Queensland Ballet is the oldest professional ballet company in Australia and one of only three professional ballet companies in the country today. The Company maintains an archive and the collection is housed in The Thomas Dixon Centre for Dance, a heritage-listed historic building in Brisbane's West End which is the headquarters of Queensland Ballet and the Queensland Dance School of Excellence. It is not a borrowing library, but access is available during office hours and facilities are available to photocopy or scan required material at a minimal cost. The collection is maintained by volunteers - a library assistant who undertakes regular general maintenance and data entry, and a trained librarian who provides cataloguing services and general supervision.
The Company maintains an archive of all programs and other company publications since foundation, plus a comprehensive collection of dance-related newspaper clippings from the entire period. In addition, the company has an extensive but only partially catalogued collection of photographs, videos, slides, and transparencies for the period to 1998, supplemented by material in the electronic medium for subsequent years. The company also has a good collection of ballet, dance and theatre books and material relating to the Borovansky Ballet.
