Burnie Regional Art Gallery

The Burnie Regional Art Gallery opened in 1978 and is regionally based and possesses one of the finest collections of Australian contemporary prints (works on paper) in Tasmania. The region encompasses seascapes, rich agricultural land and rugged mountain scenery. This large and significant regional gallery is funded and operated by the Burnie City Council with support from Arts Tasmania. It is to be found within the Burnie Civic Centre on Wilmot Street, Burnie. The Gallery presents a varied, vibrant and challenging exhibitions program in three substantial gallery spaces and a small foyer space. Artworks are protected by security systems and temperature and humidity control.

Collections

The Gallery possesses a fine collection of works on paper, recognition of the strong historical presence of the papermaking industry in the region, with a strong emphasis on fine original prints. In April 2006 the Gallery opened The Printmakers Gallery is dedicated to the ongoing exhibition of prints and print-related works from the Gallery’s permanent collection. This collection has been further enhanced with the launch of the Burnie Print Prize in March 2007, a major $7000 acquisitive award.
