Langi Morgala Museum
The Museum's Aboriginal name translates as "home of yesterday". It is housed in a bluestone and brick building built in 1874, formally the old Wool & Grain Store.
This Ararat museum, which opened in October 1970 and is run by the Volunteers of the Ararat & District Historical Society, holds a large and varied social history collection of the region, with exhibits from the gold rush period of the 1850's to the mid Twentieth Century.
The collection is mainly displayed under glass in cabinets, with larger items on open display. Some of the domestic items are displayed in four themed rooms. Large pieces of machinery are displayed outside, along with the newly refurbished blacksmiths shop.
Local born World and Olympic cycle champion Shane Kelly OAM is also featured along with local artist the late Stan Kelly OAM
The museum also houses the largest collection of Aboriginal Artifacts in Victoria, including the extensive Mooney collection.
Approximately 10000 items, plus 5000 photographs.
